Do we really want change?

Whether this question is rhetorical or just plain insane is yet to be seen. However this afternoons events made me wonder if Nigerians are really ready for the change the seriously crave. My fear is based on how comfortable we have become with the abnormal. Just yesterday a friend suggested on her fb account that the FRSC(federal road safety corps) of Nigeria should develop another safety manual that will incoporate hand signals in the stead of the indicating lights. This practice is more in vogue in Ibadan-west africa’s largest city- than other parts of the country at least to the best of my knowledge. But that’s not why I think we are not ready for change. Here’s the story. I’m standing at the “foyer” of my office, and two guys are trying to crucify a NAFDAC official who was being strict about the standards of the pure water they were producing. They went back and forth on why he was WRONG to be fussy about them producing pure water, after all it was just water and on and on they went…. The part that struck me was when one said; I even offered him “owo-ile” aka bribe, he didn’t accept. I increased it and I started thinking my offer was too little….. “. At this point I faded off to my thoughts and I wondered, our lack of value for life was amazing! Did these people really understood the reason for the inspection? Did they know that if their “pure water” was unpure people could die? Or like writefreak would put it, are we getting to individualistic for our own good.
My heart just broke and I really wondered if we were ready.
